Mid-America Qualifier, August 15th-16th, Liberty, Missouri
Two in-a-row! The Midwest Express 65s are gearing up for a strong run at Worlds as they captured their 2nd straight championship at this annual tourney in Liberty, Missouri.
The Express dominated the field and ran off a perfect 6-0 record and pushed their combined win/loss record over the past four tournaments to a stellar 18 wins against only 6 losses.
Selected to the all-tournament team were Duane Carolus, John Kelly, and Ed Schooley. The Offensive MVP was NSS manager/player, Ed Tworek and the Defensive MVP, Sonny Burton.
Next up for the boys in red…the World Masters Championship in Las Vegas. Let’s hope they bring back some hardware and rings on their fingers!

Cowtown Classic, April 5th-6th, 2014, Shawnee, Kansas
Continuing the tradition of solid tournament performance, the Midwest Express 65s opened the 2014 tournament season with a 2nd place finish at the Cowtown Classic and Mid-America Sports Complex.
The 65s posted a record of 4 wins and 2 losses and despite not grabbing the top prize made it clear to the other Midwestern teams that they are the same tough foes that have dominated play in the central states for the last few years. More great things to come from this squad made up of many NSS players to include:
George Scott, Ed Tworek, Duane Carolus, Joe Benninato, Gary McCoy, Larry Peterson, Tom Fiscus, and Rick Simodynes.

Overall, the team recorded 4 wins and 2 losses. George Scott and Woody Johansen were named to the All Tournament Team.
Midwest National Qualifier, July 16th-18th, 2013
The Midwest Express 65s continued their strong tournament season with a runner-up finish at the Midwest Tourney in Shawnee, Kansas. Despite the 2nd place finish, the team was solid on both sides of the ball and played aggressively throughout the event.

Isenhower Mid-American Nationals, July 7th-8th, 2013
The Midwest Express 65s turned in yet another solid outing at the Isenhower Mid-American Nationals in Liberty, Missouri.
With a 3-2 record, the Express tied for first place based solely on win/loss record within their 65AAA classification but fell to second place after the tie-breaker was imposed.
Highlights of the tournament included a stunning come from behind victory over the KC Fire, a 65s Major team, when the Express scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning on a walk-off base hit from the bat of Larry Peterson. Larry was selected as team MVP (see picture below) with a scorching .722 average over the course of 5 games.
Also noteworthy was the team’s 15 run scoring spree in the top of the 7th inning against the Old School Legends (60AAA) squad. Ten of the runs came with two outs. The deluge gave the Express a 30-29 lead but they fell to the powerful OSL team in the home half of the inning.
Well done guys!
Quad Cities Classic, June 19th-20th, 2013
Tough going for the Midwest Express 65s out in Rock Island, Illinois this past week as some of the finest teams in the Midwest raised the level of competition another notch and prevented our guys from bringing home the crown.
However, the team didn’t make it easy for their opponents and had two of their players named to the all-tournament team.
Duane Carolus (NSS Cardinals) was one of the hitting stars and is shown below lining one up for delivery into a gap somewhere! Good showing guys and we’ll be back at them in a few weeks.
Cornbelt Classic, June 1st-2nd, 2013
The Midwest Express 65s put in another great showing at the Cornbelt Classic tournament held in our own backyard at the LaVista Complex.

May 7th-8th, 2013
The Midwest Express team finished in 2nd place during the Nebraska Half-Century Softball Challenge in Council Bluffs, Iowa on May 7th and 8th and by the scantest of margins.
The team made it all the way to the championship game and lost an exciting game to the Scrap Iron team from Colorado by a score of 25-24. Scrap Iron came back in the home half of the seventh to wrest the title away from the Express.
NSS was superbly represented as eleven of the players are active with our league. Well done Midwest Express!
Manager Ed Tworek selected the entire team for MVP honors as the Express hit an impressive .702 over the course of six games. Leading the way was the Athletic’s George Scott (pictured below) with a blistering .905 batting average (19 for 21).

Among the wins by the Express was a solid performance in beating the Kansas City Kids, a 60s Major team, 23 to 18 despite the Kids banging out 5 long balls. Way to go Midwest Express!
